GE Profile Opal 2.0

This GE Profile Opal 2.0 ice maker can generate 24 pounds of nugget ice in 24 hours and store 3 pounds. The WiFi-enabled Opal 2.0 Ice Maker comes with a side tank accessory that triples ice production. Using the SmartHQ app and your ice maker’s built-in WiFi, you can monitor its status and create an ice-making schedule. You may also use Alexa and Google to manage the ice maker and receive automatic software updates with the latest features.

You may start enjoying ice in less than 20 minutes, and it makes one pound per hour. Chewable, crunchable, craveable nugget ice is ready in a flash and retains its flavor. Pellet ice made from compacted ice flakes is used to make cocktails, sodas, and other drinks. A touch-screen LED that darkens when not in use provides fine control. Your ice maker has a built-in self-cleaning system. This system inhibits mold and mildew with an integrated UV light.

FAQ

Aside from the design, what is the difference between the Opal 1.0 and the Opal 2.0?

Here are the main distinctions: – The sides of the housing have been rounded. – The circle LED indication has been replaced by “touch-sensitive” buttons on the front, as well as unique text labels indicating what the appliance is doing. This includes replacing the rear slider switch for cleaning with front-facing touch-button functionality. – The rear-bottom of the plastic ice bin no longer has holes; instead, a spring-loaded opening has been added that opens only when the bin is slid all the way into the appliance, eliminating drips while fully removing the bin. Overall, the appliance appears to be quieter, however this is subjective – The water drains fully in approximately 30 seconds when you drain it while cleaning. Previous units took minutes to complete this task.

Question Do you keep it on all the time or do you switch it off?

You may create a schedule using an app. We set ours to turn off after dinner and then turn back on early in the morning so that we have lots of fresh ice when we get up.

I’ve seen multiple negative reviews on Amazon for this machine, and I’m concerned about the number of defective units being sold. Has anyone had this for more than a year with no problems? Has anyone taken use of the Geek Squad extended warranty for repairs?

There are several Opal variations available. I recently purchased the Opal 2.0, which is an updated version that appears to operate fairly well. One way to tell the units apart is that the 2.0 version features touch button sensors on the front for power, light, and cleaning cycle. If you are extremely concerned, Best Buy offers an extended warranty. Although I have not utilized the extended warranty on this equipment, I have used it on the ice maker in my Samsung refrigerator and found the service to be excellent.

I’m guessing the bin isn’t refrigerated. Is it necessary to dump away water if the ice stays unused, such as if you are using it in an outdoor kitchen area that is not air conditioned?

The bin is not chilled. The melting ice returns to the reservoir and is recycled. There is no need to dump any water.

Question We’ve had this ice maker for less than a month and it’s been perfect until today, when it started making a really loud noise. The motor appears to be struggling to start. Any recommendations?

Though it is kind of a pain, cleaning it weekly like the manual recommends really keeps the motor running smoother and the fan more quiet. When ours starts making louder noise, a thorough cleaning quiets it down. The machine will also last much much longer by doing the cleaning regularly.
